A quick reference guide
for stage band and dance band arrangers.
It contains notes on ranges, registers,
and characteristics of instruments most
often associated with stage and dance
bands. It includes a comprehensive
section on Latin instrument rhythm
patterns and a basic chord chart.
Musicians new to arranging will find it
to be an invaluable reference.
Experienced arrangers will find
themselves referring to it more often
than they might imagine. |

Rock Medley |
This
arrangement is played pretty straight. Nothing very Jazzy, but with some nice harmonies. This piece has a very nice blues piano interlude in between choruses. Basic chord progressions (with some subtle
(Heh! Heh!) modifications). Our audiences are getting older so throwing a in little old-time rock doesn't hurt. Includes: Silhouette, You Send Me, Oh! Donna, Oldies But Goodies, etc.
For Alto, Tenor, Bari (can be dropped), Trumpet,
Trombone (can be dropped), Piano and rhythm. SAMPLE |

Bossa! Bossa is coming back, big time! The tune is vintage Disney, but the arrangement is not. I love the piano and rhythm section in this one. Of course, the horns are not bad either.
It is always fun to do a tune that people recognize
but in a different way than they have ever heard it
before. For: Alto, Tenor, Trumpet, and Rhythm. |

|
String Quartet. From the 1988 release of "Phantom of the Opera", this is essentially a duet between the Flute (or Violin I) and the Violin (Violin II) just as the song is a duet between Christine and Raoul in the movie. There are several places where the tempo can be "bent" for more dramatic affect. This
is a real crowd pleaser at receptions and corporate dinner music gigs.

Amazing
Grace |
This
great piece was just rewritten to be more in a New
Orleans style. Not necessarily Dixie but with
some of those influences. It has a piano solo
first 16 bars very slow and simple with a little help
from the bass and with the guitar (if you want) doing
a little arpeggio background. Then the clarinet
(or alto if you wish) comes in with an up-tempo lead
followed by the tenor and trumpet and then back to a
very moving and slow finish. For clarinet,
tenor, trumpet, and rhythm. Each time a new horn comes
in with the lead there is a modulation that the
arranger chose to write with accidentals instead of
show multiple key changes.
Comment:
That's his choice, but kind of lazy I think..
Key: Eb |

Amazing
Grace
Sax Quartet/trio/vocal |
This one is for Sax Trio plus a Tenor singer. Highest note for the tenor is Ab above middle C, which requires an above-average tenor. This has also been performed with a trumpet playing the vocal line, so there's a Bb Melody part. The same part could be played by a clarinet or soprano sax. The trio is pretty flexible. Part 1 can be Sop or Alto, Part 2 can be Alto or Tenor, Part 3 can be Tenor or Bari.
This arrangement uses all 7 verses by John Newton,
many of which are seldom heard today. In addition to
the traditional "New Britain" hymn tune, two
verses use the hymn tune "Crimond." |

Sax Quartet |
Saxophone Quartet-- One of Joseph Lamb’s best rags, and one of my most challenging arrangements. Scored for SATB or AATB. Bass Sax can replace the
Bari. Key: Eb/Ab SAMPLE

A syncopated concert waltz by Scott Joplin. This piece has several different sections and gives the performers many opportunities to vary the mood. Each horn gets its chance to have the melody. A classic movie piece. Full concert band
style intro with a lightly swung chorus and back into a concert band ending. I love the movie and I love this arrangement. Written for a combo but
is quite able to fulfill the style of the Count Basie Orchestra in the Movie. Middle chorus can be repeated for solos or used as a vocal. For Alto, Tenor, Bone or Bari, Trumpet, and rhythm. (A very nice bass part on this one.) Key is "C"

For
young lovers of an older nature...This is the old rock-n-roll favorite with more modern chord progressions. Uses nicely done harmonies and
has the melody going back and forth between trumpet and the alto with the bone, or bari, playing a neat counter-melody. A slow buckle polishing tempo for that slow dance everyone asks for. Alto, tenor
(can be dropped), bari or bone, trumpet, and rhythm.

Yup! It is that "Troubled Waters" song. There is a strong piano part in this one. The 3 horns carry the leads mostly but the piano has many solo interludes in the song. Very reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel only a lot better.

Ferry
Cross the Mersey |
Ferry Cross the Mersey is the name of a 1964 song, film and soundtrack, all related to Liverpool and the Mersey Sound, as well as the Mersey Ferry. The song was recorded by Gerry and the Pacemakers and released in late 1964 in the UK and in 1965 in the US. It was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching #6 in the US and charting twice in the UK. This arrangement features the trumpet and a solo for the alto sax, with trombone and rhythm section.
Donna, Oldies But Goodies,
etc. For
Alto, Tenor, Bari (can be dropped), Trumpet, Trombone
(can be dropped), Piano, and rhythm. SAMPLE |

Flight
of the Foo Birds |
A swinging up-tempo tune originally written for Count Basie by Neal Hefti. (Isn't the musical history you can learn here
incredible!) Cup muted trumpets set the theme, and there are solos for tenor and trumpet. This chart can be played without the trombone and
2nd trumpet. You can really soar above the mundane, everyday stock
charts, everyone else has, with this arrangement of "Flight".

Legs Rag
Sax Quartet |
Saxophone Quartet.
This James Scott rag is unusual because it modulates up a fifth instead of a fourth, which is more typical. This rag arrangement is a playful piece in which the melody “hops” (sorry!) back and forth among the top three horns, with the Bari forming the constant foundation. This arrangement was premiered by the Royal City Sax Quartet on
October 3, 2003. Arranged for SATB or AATB. Bass sax can replace the Bari.

A New Orleans Revival standard, but a new
arrangement. The first 2 choruses are in march
(6/8) style, and the last chorus is the all-out

solos, and the first 2 choruses can be repeated and/or
deleted as necessary for your gig. In case
